Metric ton of bananas will increase to 75 euros in 2020
With the closing of the trade agreement between Ecuador and the European Union (EU), the banana industry hopes that with this, the fruit production increases about 5%.
“In the case of bananas, the tariff reduction will begin in 2016 and will conclude in 2020. This will apply once it enters into force the trade agreement. There will be a difference of one Euro per metric ton with tariffs for four years, but in the end of the period the same level of tariff that of other exporting countries, ie 75 euros per tonne, will be reached,” said Roberto Betancourt, Chief Negotiator of Ecuador .
The European market represents the 60% of banana exports. The producing fruit comes to countries such as Germany, Italy and Spain, said Gabriel Sánchez, owner of the Timbirín banana fields, located in the Huigra- El Triunfo way.
