This morning the former president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet visited the Foreign Ministry of Ecuador, where she held a dialogue with Ecuadorian authorities about the “achievements and challenges in gender equity in Ecuador.” Later, Bachelet would meet with Ecuadorian President, Rafael Correa.

The UN Women Executive Director, Michelle Bachelet, arrived last night to the Ecuadorian capital. She was received by several ministers and a group of Ecuadorian women who congratulated her management on women’s rights.

The visit of the former Chilean leader is part of a tour she is doing in Latin America to ask world leaders at the Rio +20 Summit in order to accelerate their commitments towards gender equality and to make sustainable development a reality. In Ecuador, Bachelet seeks dialogue with the Ecuadorian authorities on gender equality and democracy. That meeting will also hold a forum for women leaders on “The Future Women Want: gender equality, women empowerment and sustainable development.”

“We want to ensure that countries are committed to continuing to bet heavily on women, because women are a key to sustainable development,” said Bachelet.
