NASA Created a Test To Detect Early Osteoporosis
Posted On 30 May 2012
U.S. scientists have developed a new urine test that can detect early stages of osteoporosis, according to a study published by the University of Arizona and NASA.
NASA conducts these studies because astronauts in microgravity experience skeletal unloading and suffer bone loss.
The aim of the analysis is to detect traces of bone calcium in urine, called isotopes that vary at the atomic level when the bone is destroyed for that reason is able to indicate changes in bone density.
“The concept works in healthy people, the next step is to test it in patients with diseases that alter bone mass, in this way would be the most important clinical application,” said Dr. Anbar, professor of Biochemistry and Space Exploration at ASU. (PLS)
