New Traffic Law Intents to Reduce Accidents Toll and Insecurity In Roads
Once the amendment of Traffic Law is published in the Official Gazette, two types of penalties will be set for drivers that violated the maximum speed limit.
Drivers who exceed certain speed limits must pay a fine of $ 78 and 6 points will be taken from their driver’s license (art. 42). Additionally, there is a speed range that will determine the seriousness of the contravention. Thus, those who fall outside that range will be punished with three days in jail plus a fine of $ 260 and 10 points will be taken from their license (art. 145).
This mean that if the speed limit is 70 km / h (for light vehicles), the moderate range would be 40 km / h more. A driver traveling at a speed between 70 and 110 km / h shall be punished with Article 142. But a driver who exceeds 110 km / h shall be punished with art. 145.
As explained by the Director of the Transit Commission of Guayas, Ricardo Anton, these speed ranges are based on a technical study, which will determine the type of road, level of service, vehicle, and pedestrian flows. The new speed limits and ranges will be established through an amendment to the Rules of the Road Law.
