O Globo Criticized Rafael Correa in its Opinion Section
Posted On 16 Aug 2011
O Globo, one of the most influential print media in Brazil, published an editorial Sunday criticizing the way President Rafael Correa has attacked the independent press in Ecuador.”Ecuador is ranked 77 out of 169 countries in Human Development Index of the UN (Brazil is in the 73). Of its population, 33% is below the poverty line (in Brazil, 26%). The infant mortality rate is 19.65 per thousand births, Ecuador is ranked 100 among 223 countries (Brazil is in the 94). Its economy grew 0.4% in 2009 and 3.7% last year, below the needs of its population. As you see there is much to be done to improve the welfare of the population, but for President Correa, the problem is the press,” says the newspaper in the opinion section.
It adds that Correa holds the title of “champion of the repression of independent media among his peers–Bolivarian Chavez from Venezuela and Morales in Bolivia and also relates to Cristina Kirchner from Argentina.” O Globo also mentioned that Correa spent 42 minutes criticizing the press on national TV, while he delegated the task of informing to his ministers.
