Police request to include seven cyber-crimes in the Criminal Code
According to the head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Judicial Police Technology, the major Nicolay Zapata, the organized cyber-crime changed their modus operandi, they stopped “cloning” credit and debit cards to focus on the Internet to steal. Its purpose is to get more electronic money and affect most users.
This statement was made yesterday by Zapata before the Justice Committee of the National Assembly to call for the criminalization of seven cyber-crimes within the Integrated Criminal Code.
Major Zapata said the card information theft on stores or in ATM’s has decreased in Ecuador. But the theft by computer viruses or fake pages has increased. According to the prosecution the number of cyber theft has increased, because in 2010 there were 866 complaints and in 2011 the number augmented to 3662.
Zapata said the problem is “the speed with which this type of crime increases.” For the president of the Commission for Justice, Gina Godoy, the purpose of the inclusion of these new figures is the identification of who is behind the attacks through electronic means.
