Problems with the budget for sectional elections

Diana Atamaint, vice president of the National Electoral Council, spoke this morning in FM Sports Area about the adjustments and budget revision of the 2019 elections.

The vice president said that the National Electoral Council still does not have the necessary budget for the electoral process. “We should have started with the change of address campaigns, but we have no money,” said Atamaint. She also commented that the country does not have the resources to carry out activities that are inalienable according to the Constitution.

Regarding the budget, Atamaint said that a reduction of $ 140,000,000 to $ 119,000,000 was made. However, the budget for the electoral process continues to be analyzed (March 2019 elections). In this analysis, several unnecessary items were found, such as spending $ 1,800,000 on mappings to find out where the different electoral precincts are located.

The National Electoral Council will meet today in the afternoon with the Minister of Economy and Finance, Richard Martínez Alvarado in order to obtain an advance. In addition, the adjustments made to the electoral budget will be considered. It is expected to receive at least a part of the necessary money, since it is important to start the electoral process promptly. (I)
