Prosecutor’s Office initiates an investigation against Joaquín Villamar Cabello
The Guayas Provincial Prosecutor’s Office began an investigation on March 28 against Joaquín Cupertino Villamar Cabello, ex-husband of the mayor of Guayaquil, regarding the investigation of Diario EXPRESO published on Sunday March 27 and Monday 28.

Supporters of the mayor went to wait for her at the Prosecutor’s Office, in a hearing of the API embezzlement cases.
The entity confirmed that the decision was made “after learning – through publications in the media – about the alleged irregular acquisition of 81 plots of land in Daular, near the new Guayaquil airport.”
The entity confirmed to this medium that the prosecutor in charge of the case will be Dr. Álex López, from the Public Prosecutor’s Office 6 of Citizen Heritage. In addition, he specified that he cannot give statements because, from this moment, the subject enters a preliminary investigation.
The announcement comes after President Guillermo Lasso officially requests an investigation from the Internal Revenue Service. The president said that “an exhaustive investigation” should be carried out into the tax returns of the former mayor, who made land on the coast road even though she was her husband, in May and September 2020.
