Quito municipality requests extension of Tababela airport

Posted On 23 Aug 2013

Quito’s Mayor Augusto Barrera said that the municipality made a request to the concessionaire of the airport of the capital, Quiport, to start the second phase of construction at the Tababela airport, which yesterday met six months of operations.

“The contract is very clear: If there is no improvement in the quality of the operation, the operating conditions of the contract are not met.” They (Quiport) know that they just have hours to answer our demand,” said Barrera.

The air terminal was designed in four stages which are expected to be completed until 2020. The second phase, planned for 2017, includes an extension with more rooms, to double the capacity of this space, to provide  the large number of users more comfort.

The Mayor added that it has fined Quiport with more than 700.000 dollars  for operating problems, and from the next few months the company Iberia has asked for permission to fly the route Madrid-Quito.
