Rapporteur joins the SIP´s request of a free press
Edison Lanza, Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), joined international organizations that met yesterday in Quito to express their support to Fundamedios and condemn the policies of the Ecuadorian government against critical and independent media and journalists.
He argued that “the repressive atmosphere” of the country is a cause for the reaction of organizations and associations. He mentioned the “abuse” of legal figures and “disproportionate penalties” by control bodies that execute the Communications Act.
He also noted the refusal of the regime of Rafael Correa to dialogue about the Inter-American Human Rights System and asked to be alert to the intentions of creating new organisms that could respond to particular political agendas.
Representatives of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), the Institute for Press and Society (IPYS for its Spanish acronym), the World Association of Newspapers and other international organizations supported his words at the end of the conference, in the Eugenio Espejo Convention Center.
