Tourists can watch humpback whales in the Puntilla-Santa Elena ecological reserve, in Salinas.

Sixteen tourist boats are accredited -by the Ministries of Tourism and Environment- to transfer visitors to this reserve. The cost per person ranges from $ 20 to $ 25. Boats depart from 08:00 to 16:00 from the port of Salinas.

More than 6,000 whales come gradually, in groups of ten or in floods to Ecuadorian coast from May. These mammals undertake their journey back to cooler areas in September, according to biologist Fernando Felix, author of “A Field Guide to the Humpback Whale Watching in Ecuador´s Coast.”

He added that it is estimated that more than 6,000 whales arriving to the country can reproduce more than 10,000 calfs.
