Shrimp industry drives isolated growth in imports
Despite the crisis unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic that hits the different productive sectors of the country -especially the importer, which registered a 19% drop in purchases abroad from January to May, in relation to the same period of 2019- There are products that have found an opportunity and have grown in their import.

Shrimp industry drives isolated growth in imports
The Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (Fedexpor) registers two items with an increase in imports in the first four-month period of the year in its Statistical Report on Foreign Trade.
These are: balanced for animals, with an export of $ 267 million, representing a growth of 12% compared to imports in the same period of 2019; and cereals with $ 168 million (8%), both products whose main supplier is the United States .
The Chamber of Industries of Guayaquil , through its Technical Department, manages its own figures that show that the tariff positions whose imports presented an increase in the first four months of the year represented $ 1,729 million , an increase of 41%.
Among the products whose imports increased are soy cakes (27%) , wheat (except for sowing) with 47%, polyethylene with a density of less than 0.94 g / cm3 (6%), balanced food (29% ) , among other products.
Meanwhile, on the use of these inputs, the Chamber of Industries explains that soybean cake and wheat are intended for the production of balanced food.
“It is understandable that this performance has occurred, especially in the case of soybean cake, since shrimp farming has managed to maintain a good performance in recent years, with shrimp exports increasing between January and April this year by 12 % compared to the same period of 2019 ″, analyzes the entity, although it points out that if only the March-April period is considered, shrimp exports show a 4% drop .
