Six banana plantations showoff sectoral mark
Ecuadornews:

Enter new markets and recover the United States are some of the aspirations of the six farms that were recognized Monday night with the sectoral brand ‘Premium & Sustainable Banana’.
The certification was presented at the inauguration of the XV International Banana Forum held in Guayaquil until tomorrow, in which the representatives of the farms: Santa Bárbara, Santa Clara 3, San Vicente, Elba, Las Cañas and Aguas Claras received the distinctive.
Eduardo Ledesma, executive director of the Ecuadorian Association of Banana Exporters (AEBE), organizer of the forum, explained that the process began with the signing of an agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Trade, which started a pilot project with the six farms
He mentioned that the companies that seek to obtain the sectoral brand must be based on a Global Gap certification that starts from a base of internationally recognized good practices. Then, they must meet other conditions that are not in the Global Gap such as social, labor and environmental responsibility.
Marianela Ubilla, general manager of Agzulasa, owner of the Aguas Claras certified farm, said that the sectorial mark serves to counteract the negative comments on the way of producing bananas in Ecuador. “We are doing things well, Ecuador has evolved a lot.”
With the distinctive they will seek to open more markets in Europe, especially in supermarkets, and recover the US, lost due to lack of competitiveness with the banana of Guatemala.
The second Business Roundtable ‘Banano del Ecuador’ organized by Pro Ecuador, with 13 international buyers, is taking place next to the forum. Business expectations are $ 40 million. In 2017, $ 38 million was achieved. (I)
