Students Demonstrations Outside Presidential Palace

Posted On 29 Sep 2010

On Tuesday several students, workers, professors from universities across the country rallied against the presidential veto to the Superior Education Law, which will come into effect on Friday by the Ministry of Law.

The demonstrators came from different provinces in order to talk to President Rafael Correa. After waiting for hours, they were told a presidential assessor would receive them. Soon the demonstration began and students threw eggs against Carondelet Palace. Police guarded the site.

President of the Superior Education National Council (Conesup), Gustavo Vega warned they wouldn’t acknowledge the law and affirmed they would present an unconstitutionality demand. If the situation doesn’t go forward, he will proceed to request law modifications, he added.

Meanwhile students said they will exercise the right of resistance, which is stated in the Constitution, because law has undermined their participation in the Council.
