Despite the peace negotiations between the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad; the Syrian army recently shelled the city of Homs. So far five people have died as the troubled opposition continues to try to unite its various factions.
The attack occurred as the Syrian opposition factions met in Istanbul as means to unify themselves prior to an international meeting in the Turkish capital on Sunday.
The crisis in Syria is expected to dominate after a three-day summit of the Arab League in Baghdad on Tuesday, and the so-called “Friends of Syria” a coalition group dominated by European and Gulf countries along with the United States would meet on Sunday in Istanbul. (AV)
