The buses with garden on the roof already circulate through the streets of Guayaquil
Ecuadornews:

The transporters presented an ecological project in two cooperatives. The unit shave Philippine turf to reduce pollution.
In the streets of Guayaquil they look like common buses of public transportation:narrow doors to receive passengers, signs indicating their routes and noisy engines that warn of their steps. But now on its roofs, both the front and back, gray edges protrude. These are the frames that contain the gardens that now shine the inter-cantonal vehicles that travel from Daule to Guayaquil(Guayas).
The Union of Passenger Transport Cooperatives of Guayas presented this Wednesday,November 21 this ecological project, which will start with the units of theLord of the Miracles and the Daulis routes.
Miguel Anchundia, head of that union, presented the two groups that already have this adaptation. He assured that the goal is to contribute to the care of the environment. The green areas that are on the roofs of the units cover four meters of garden and weigh eight kilos.
The sown species is Philippine grass, which is distributed in 24 polyethylene containers, whose measures are 58×23 centimeters. According to transporters, one square meter of the vegetable roof can absorb between five and eight kilos of pollution.
“Philippine grass retains more carbon monoxide,” Anchundia said. The impact that the project would have -calculated- is 190,000 kilos of CO2 per year “if the entire inter-cantonal and inter-provincial bus fleet were added”.
Kelvin León, representative of the Daulis transport cooperative, explained that the vehicle was subjected to revisions to install the garden on top. According tohim, the lawn was placed with a special glue, which prevents the filtration of water when the plant is irrigated.
“There is also no possibility of falling containers.” The product – said – lasts10 years and can be watered every 15 days and prune once a month. The cost of project execution per unit amounts to $ 1,800, which have been financed by the carriers.
However, Anchundia considers that the Government can contribute by returning the payment of green taxes or VAT to allow the sustainability of the initiative. In Madrid and Barcelona this type of units with green spaces already work. (I)
