The FAO advocates for small fishermen
Ecuadornews:
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called for guaranteeing the rights of small-scale fishing communities. Issues such as tenure of marine resources, work, decent pay, and gender equality constitute un-waivable rights.
Since the adoption by the FAO countries of voluntary guidelines for small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication in 2014, this agency has promoted its implementation at the global, regional and local levels.
The expert of the organization Nicole Franz explained that the implementation of these policies must go “beyond fishing.” She recalled that these guidelines are based on a human rights approach and emphasized the recognition of communal rights in access to resources and the principle of participation, since “any decision should be taken with the small communities of fishermen because they are the one who better know their problems and needs.” (I)
