The price of a sack of onions fell $ 10 in a week

Posted On 13 Sep 2017

Ecuadornews:

In one week the price of a bag of 40 kilos of red onion, as it is known in the market, plummeted from $ 28 to $ 18, depending on the intermediary.

Therefore, producers accelerated the harvest and thus achieved a price that allows them to pay the costs of production. For each hectare of land, the investment is $ 8,000, obtaining in each one between 700 and 1,000 units.

In previous years, a sack of onions cost up to $ 8, which meant a loss to the producer. Juana Lavayen sadly stressed that she depends on the intermediary. “They put the price of our work; we can not do anything. It’s either accepting or losing our production.”

“Farmers have reported the problem to technicians of the Ministry of Agriculture but have not yet received a response,” said Lenin Mera, who is also an onion producer. Customs has reported operations on the southern borders. Mera said that the product that comes from Peru is the great competitor, as it monopolizes the market. Peruvian onions cost almost the half compared to the local ones, although their quality is lower.

Customs participates in the Dialogue Tables in different provinces of the country. Specifically in those related to Health, Safety, and Smuggling. Among the commitments is the strengthening of border controls. The institutional presence and the support to the agricultural sector to enhance the commercialization of its products will be permanent. (I)
