Yesterday the majority of the ruling bloc voted in favor of the report for the second debate on the Prevention of Drugs bill, which increases from one to three years in prison the penalty for trafficking at minimum level; and from three to five years in prison the middle scale trafficking.
The change comes after President Rafael Correa insisted that penalties for micro-trafficking should be toughen, on Wednesday night, at the ELAP 2015 conference.
In the end, the bill got 92 positive votes from AP and some of Avanza, ARE, the former AP and MPCNG. Votes against totalled 16: SUMA party, SP, CREO, Pachakutik and MID; one white vote of AP and 13 abstentions of Pachakutik-MPD, CREO, Avanza, PSC and others.
