UN Secretary Supports Correa’s Government

Posted On 15 Feb 2011

The General Secretary of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, visited Ecuador.

Yesterday, Ban Ki-moon went to Palacio de Carondelet to meet with President Rafael Correa. They discussed the future of the initiative to save the Yasuni National Park from the ITT oil field exploitation (Yasuni-ITT), as well as the political situation in Ecuador, the September 30th crisis, Ecuador’s contribution in peace keeping missions of the UN and the situation of foreign refugees in the country.

Ban Ki-moon said the UN would continue to support the Yasuni-ITT in exchange for a financial contribution from the international community to curb global warming. “This innovative concept to fight global warming aims to the root of the problem to prohibit the release of carbon (…) it’s very creative and worthy of international support and compensation,” said the General Secretary of UN at a press conference .

Ban Ki-moon, who was declared an Illustrious Guest by the Municipality of Quito, expressed his support for the Ecuadorian government and democratic institutions. In addition, the Government requested the UN to support the restructuring of the police and the strengthening of their capacities to fight against insecurity.

On the crisis of September 30, Ban Ki-moon suggested the dialogue and reconciliation while Correa stressed that “In any civilized country dialogue is not implemented… laws are applied and that is being applied in Ecuador.”
