Valuable information about memory loss was discover
After several years of research on the cause of memory loss related to age, the scientists have succeeded in finding a convincing lead that was unveiled yesterday through a report.
The text points out that age-related memory loss is a different problem is other than the premonitory symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and indicates that what is considered normal forgetfulness in the elderly could be a treatable problem.
In reaching this conclusion, the researchers from the Medical Center of the University of Columbia examined several brains, young and old, donated by people who died without showing symptoms of neurological diseases, and discovered in them that a certain gene, located in a specific part of the hippocampus, the brain memory Center, ceases to work properly in older people, since it produces less of a crucial protein called RbAp48.
Scientists reduced this protein in young rodents, and noted that in doing so the animals got lost in labyrinths and lost efficiency in other jobs that required the use of the memory, in the same way that occurs naturally in old mice.
But the most important part of the discovery was that memory loss is reversible, since the increase in the levels of protein allowed elderly rodents to recover a memory as sharp as the youth, thus noted by the researchers in the Science Translational Medicine journal.
