Venezuela’s CNE analyzes possible elections in March
The Venezuelan National Electoral Council has carried out a timetable for potential presidential elections for March 31, although the government has not officially confirmed anything. However, the timing will depend on the health of President Hugo Chavez, upon his return to the country and decides what the chavismo decides once the president is in Caracas, as the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional pointed it out.
According to Article 233 of the Constitution, in front of the complete absence of the president in the first four years of his mandate “there will be a new and direct universal election within 30 consecutive days.” This means that there will be no additional time after the convening and carrying out the elections because the elections will be exactly 30 days after the qualification of the absence.
Meanwhile the absence of Chavez worries the country, where accusations of corruption between the chavismo and the opposition shaken Venezuela’s political scene since the president remains hospitalized in Cuba for nearly two months.
