Winter Olympics of 2018 will be in South Korea
This Wednesday the Winter Olympics received an award for the first time to South Korea as the alpine resort of Pyeongchang was chosen to host the 2018 Games. Pyeongchang would be the third Asian city to host the Winter Games, after Sapporo, Japan, in 1972, and Nagano y 1998.
Pyeongchang was a persistent candidate for hosting the games and after a proposal to expand access to winter sports into the populous and lucrative Asian market, it built a solid candidacy.
The South Korean city won the secret vote of delegates from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), after receiving 63 votes, while Munich had 25 and 7 for Annecy, France. The voting was held at the general assembly of the I.O.C. in Durban, South Africa. (AV)
