Workshop to encourage girls to pursue technologic careers
The country and the world need more people trained in technology and technology needs creativity, which also comes from diversity, including gender.
According to records at the University of Guayaquil and the Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral (ESPOL), women are still less than 40% in engineering careers and less than 30% in those linked to new technologies.
Lourdes Serrano, from Guayaquil, ICT educator (information and communications technology) is one of the organizers of FabTech; A workshop designed to motivate the interest of girls in scientific and technological fields, everything must start from basic education, also social.
Society tends to separate girls from boys by colors or types of games that promote the idea that girls are weak and boys must protect them.
Likewise, it delivers toys “for their gender” and does not expose girls to construction tools or physical strength. We based this information with a survey conducted to our readers, in which 68% said they prefer dolls for their daughters. This is something that must change.
