209 goods and services that will charge the 14% VAT in Ecuador

Fast foods, ketchup, shampoo, soap, clothing, hair dye, mobile telephony and even the wincha service are among the 209 goods and services for family consumption that will chatge a VAT of 14% from tomorrow , June 1, 2016.

These products are part of the basket of goods and services in the Consumer Price Index, monthly recorded by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).

The VAT hike was established in the Solidarity Law to address the effects of the earthquake, and it has already been approved by the Assembly. The products subject to VAT represent 58% of the goods and services purchased by a household. However, if considering the weight on the monthly expenditure of a home, the products a 49%, according to the Corporation for Development Studies (Cordes). The weight goes down to 47% if fuels are excluded, since the members of the Assembly included a change in the bill to prevent that the VAT increase impacts on the prices of these products.
