21 Dead and 141 Injured in Mumbai Blasts

India’s financial capital, Mumbai was the scene of three explosions yesterday afternoon, leaving at least 21 ​​dead and 141 injured, local authorities informed. Two bombs exploded in the south of the city, at the Opera House and at the Zaveri Bazaar, while the third one exploded downtown, specifically in Dadar district, which boasts one of the main metro stations. All three attacks occurred almost simultaneously.

In the case of Zarevi bazaar, a command of the city police reported that an explosive was hidden in an umbrella. While in the other two cases, police believe it was an improvised explosive device (IED, for its acronym in English), handmade bombs. The explosion occurred downtown at a taxi parked near a bus stop, witnesses quoted by the BBC reported.

Indian Home Ministry, which from the beginning has indicated that it is an terrorist attempt, has warned that the death toll may increase as the hours go by. Meanwhile security forces continue to investigate what happened and the authorities have declared a state of high alert in the city. The Indian capital, New Delhi and other cities such as Calcutta are also on alert for fear of further attacks.
