The progress of vaccination against bird flu in Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and Pichincha is 76%. These are the most affected provinces.

Start of vaccination in the north of the country.
More than 4.7 million birds have already received the first dose of the avian flu vaccine, according to the Phyto and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad).
Of that group of birds, 236,853 have already received the second dose. The time between the application of each dose is four to six weeks, explains Agrocalidad.
The vaccination process began on March 3, 2023. On average, vaccination progress is 76% in the three provinces where it is being carried out: Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and Pichincha.
The vaccine is applied to birds that are on farms close to the places where the outbreaks occurred. Pichincha is the one that shows the greatest progress, with 93%. Then there is Tungurahua, with 90%, and Cotopaxi, with 46%.
Until March 6, there were 1.2 million birds in Ecuador that had been slaughtered or died as a result of avian influenza. This number of birds corresponds to 17 outbreaks, which occurred in Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolívar, Pichincha, Azuay and Imbabura.
For the application of vaccines, farm owners must comply with biosecurity measures.
In addition, they must present negative results of diagnostic tests for avian influenza carried out on their birds, have a responsible veterinarian and be registered with Agrocalidad.
