500 People Attended Freedom Meeting
Around 500 people gathered yesterday for a “freedom” meeting in Quito called by political and social groups. Political activist Carlos Vera played the role of moderator on the event.
Demonstrators arrived at 10:00 carrying flags and posters with messages alluding to freedom and rejection of authoritarianism. Jeanette Orbe, wife of Col. Cesar Carrion, former director of the Police Hospital whom President Correa accusses of attempted assassination, was among the attendees. Patricia Ochoa, general Jorge Chabela’s widow, gave a speech about the lack of judicial and the government’s action to avoid crime.
The journalist Diego Oquendo, also attended the event and explained that his presence was not to proselytize or politicking. He warned that where the money is abundant and the audit weakens, true journalists are required. Correa also requested the President to withdraw the lawsuit against El Universo newspaper and former editor of Opinion Emilio Palacio. As well as with the trial of journalists Christian Zurita and Juan Carlos Calderón, author of Gran Hermano.
Protesters asked for Correa to leave office shouting “Leave, Correa, leave!” between each intervention.
