Spain has Better Management of Immigration

Posted On 14 Nov 2010

For the first time the United States and Spain analyzed their immigration politics. The Ecuadorians weren’t physically present however they were among the topics of the analysis that tries to incorporate the immigration measures that work for both countries, the appointment was organized by the Migration Policy Institute of EE.UU and the Fundacion Ciudadania y Valores de España (Foundation of Citizenship and Values of Spain) which observed the strengths and weaknesses of both countries regarding migration.

“The immigration is the main factor for the demographic growth. We went from community that sends immigrants to one that receives them for the last 20 years.” Commented Rocio Palacio de Haro, Director of Immigrant Policies for de Andalucia Community.

In Spain there are 8,3 millions of foreigners, this means that an 8% of their habitants is from the outside. The main immigration nations are British, Rumanian, Germans, Ecuadorians, and Colombians. In Andalucia over 200 nationalities coexist.

The Federal Government of United States doesn’t involve itself in programs to integrate immigrants like Spain does. The bureau system “Only in 2009 there have been over 15 thousand legislations related to immigrants, this points out what is happening.” Added Sheri Steisel, of the American Conference of State Legislatures, according to her this is all negative because there are positive regulations on different States.

“In Spain everything is backwards, from up to down, with the society resisting it to receive the immigrant and the immigrant feels isolated due to the social tensions.” Added Alfonso Aguilar, spokesman of the Citizenship Office created during the Bush administration.
