Tungurahua Volcano Increased its Eruptive Activity

Yesterday morning, Tungurahua volcano increased its activity for over an hour and a half.

Technical Geophysical Institute announced that this change in behavior began at 08:57 am and lasted until 10:30, at that time two explosions occured that threw steam with high content of dark ash.

The cloud reached a height of 5 kilometers and headed northwest. Lookouts reported the output of incandescent material.

Jorge Ordonez, volcanologist at the Tungurahua Volcano Observatory (OVT), said: “a column of steam that came to 1 000 meters above the crater was seen,” adding that “despite the decreased activity, the electronic equipment that monitor the volcano indicate tremor (earthquake) and movement of fluids (magma) inside.”

According to volcanologists, falling rocks dragged the material accumulated at the volcano. This gave a false impression of pyroclastic flows.
