Israel and Palestine agree a new ceasefire of 72 hours

Posted On 11 Aug 2014
ISRAEL-PALESTINIAN-GAZA-CONFLICTIsrael and the Palestinian militias have agreed a new truce that came into effect on Sunday midnight, August 10 (23.00 in Spain), in which for 72 hours no rockets will belaunched against Israel neither the army will bomb the Gaza Strip.
Last Friday, already a similar cease-fire expired and although the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu was willing to extend it, Hamas opposed. Now, under pressure from the international community and militarily weakened, Israel agreed to another ceasefire.
Ezzat Al Ahmed, spokesman of the Islamists, explained in El Cairo that after meeting for the third time with Egyptian mediators, they decided to join the truce “with the hope that it will serve to reach a definitive agreement.”
“It is necessary to lift the blockade on Gaza by land, sea and air. The truce should serve to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” he said.
On the other hand, Israel did not issue any statement last night explaining its accession.
