Catalan parliament approves convening of sovereignty consultation

The Catalan Parliament approved on Friday by a large majority a law that allows to convene a sovereign consultation, which is scheduled for November 9.

The  consultations law was passed by 106 votes, 78% of the regional Chamber, coming from the largest Catalan nationalist and Socialists parties. While 28 parliamentarians voted against the Catalonia and Ciutadans Popular Parties.

The nationalist president, Artur Mas, must shortly convene a consultation under this Act which authorizes the regional government to organize non-binding popular consultations “in the scope of its powers.”

According to the articles of the law, from the convening date of the inquiry until its conclusion, a minimum of one month and a maximum of two must elapse. Ie, Mas has until October 9 to convene a consultation.
