Political prisoners must be released according to Rousseff

On Thursday, in an interview with CNN, Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil,expressed her desire that political prisoners are released by the Venezuelan government.

“The member countries of Unasur, which are involved the leadership of the Summit of the Americas, have, even today, the absolute interest that there is a higher release, that the prisoners are released, that there are no levels of violence in the streets, we all have that interest,” said the Brazilian president one day prior to the VI Summit of the Americas, to be held in Panama.

Leopoldo Lopez, opposition leader, and Antonio Ledezma, the mayor of Caracas, have been arrested before the disapproving glances from international human rights organizations. During the interview, Rousseff was clear in explaining she does not seek to interfere in internal affairs of Venezuela, but she showed against the jailing of political opponents.

Finally, the president called for greater willingness of the US to resume diplomatic relations with Cuba. “We do not find correct, and we do not consider that boycott measures will come that far, measures that segregate the country, and I think we have a great event to commemorate in this Summit of the Americas, which shows the courage of two countries, the United States (President Barack Obama), and of President Raul Castro, which consisted in politically ending with the last remnant of the Cold War,” Rousseff said in this regard.
