Government supporters and the opposition defined their strategy for the debate of amendments

Posted On 03 Dec 2015

asamblea-ecuador-ecuadortimes-ecuadornewsAssembly members of the opposition and the ruling coalition met in the last 72 hours in different locations to coordinate their actions today in the plenary, where they will meet to process on second reading the draft constitutional amendments.

The principal and alternate representatives of the Alianza PAIS (AP) party met up in a hotel lounge in Quito from early morning. Fausto Cayambe, coordinator of the bloc, called it a “political and a territorial public policy assessment workshop,” which had nothing to do with the amendments, because they talked about it on Monday.

As there are 99 assemblymen representing AP, not everyone will intervene, because the desire of the ruling party is to approve the amendments today. Cayambe said that the intervention of the members of the Casual Commission on Amendments, who are eleven (including CREO, PSC and Avanza parties) and at least one assembly member from each Permanent Commission, is not certain

The second vice president of the Assembly, Marcela Aguinaga (AP), said that the prioritization of alternates is legitimate and constitutional, as a normal parliamentary practice, “that´s like splitting hairs.”
