After the latest official figures on security were announced, the legislative opposition forges a response through the bill of the National Police.

The initiative, that seeks to become the alternative to the official bill of Public Safety, whose debate began in 2013 and its conclusion is not looming, will be submitted in late March in the National Assembly by the hypercritical legislator Diego Salgado (CREO), of the Sovereignty commission, who will need, according to the parliamentary mathematics, an unlikely approval of Alianza PAIS, to promote the law.

According to what daily Expreso advanced, the proposal (still under development) will seek an option to overcome “the trauma left by the 30S. Because since then they´re seeking to weaken the police. Why do they want to cut the functions?” Said Salgado.

Their bill aims to clarify the formula for regulating the number of police agents needed by the country, to review the minimum instruction necessary before taking the baton and the gun, to ensure legal defense of the policemen demanded by criminals behind bars and, above all, to define the mechanism to gather insecurity figures because, at the discretion of the opposition: “There are no official figures”. The legislator that suffered an armed assault two weeks ago, believes that “no matter what they keep saying ‘Ecuador, a country of peace,’the streets and the figures are contradictory. As an Ecuadorian, I do not feel safe.”
