Posted On 09 Apr 2016

Diego Alvear Rogge and Diego Zapatier Penaherrera were sentenced to five days in jail and five days of community labor for allegedly having verbally assaulted police agents in the march that took place last Thursday in downtown Guayaquil, against the new tax reform.

The detainees were taken to the Modelo barracks; the indictment hearing was held yesterday morning in the Florida Norte Judicial Unit. Both, leaders of the Emputados Ecuador (Pissed Off Ecuador) collective, comply with the judgment in the Provisional Detention Center (CDP), located in the Daule highway.

Silvia Buendía, spokeswoman of ResistanciaEc and witness of the arrest, said that the march was peaceful and advanced until Malecon Avenue. But then some agents attempted to wrest from the protesters a puppet that alluded President Rafael Correa.

Juan Vizueta, attorney for the convicted, said that they were first arrested for an alleged physical assault against the agents, but as the alleged affected did not appear before the court, the defendants were prosecuted for alleged verbal abuse according to the police report (I).
