Posted On 24 Apr 2016
The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck the northern coast of Ecuador a week ago rose to 646, President Rafael Correa said yesterday.
Although the president celebrated the rescue of 113 people, the tragedy, the worst in nearly 70 years, has left 130 missing, nearly 12,500 wounded, 26,000 refugees and billions of dollars in losses that will affect the country’s economy.
“These have been sad days for the country. The country is in crisis, “the president said showing a picture with updated figures during his usual weekly address. “Calm, dedication, sacrifice are needed in this crisis, but with great efficiency and effectiveness.”
Since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Ecuadorian coast on Saturday, more than 700 aftershocks have occurred, forcing villagers to leave their homes or sleep outdoors for fear that their homes collapse (I).
