The death toll rises to 646 by strong earthquake in Ecuador

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck the northern coast of Ecuador a week ago rose to 646, President Rafael Correa said yesterday.

Although the president celebrated the rescue of 113 people, the tragedy, the worst in nearly 70 years, has left 130 missing, nearly 12,500 wounded, 26,000 refugees and billions of dollars in losses that will affect the country’s economy.
