The Embassy of Mexico in Ecuador ratified yesterday that it will facilitate the transfer of dozens of Cubans camping in this country and who ask help to reach the United States.

Juan Nungaray, Mexico’s ambassador to Ecuador, said to the Ecuavisa channel that his country has “an immigration policy that establishes requirements and procedures for visa applicants” that have to be met.

On the possibility of establishing a humanitarian corridor and facilitating transit visas, as Mexico did for the Cubans stuck in Central America, he answered: “Here (in Ecuador) the situation is very different, so the position of our government is different.”

Since last Sunday, dozens of Cubans, -many in a irregular situation- have camped in La Carolina park, in the north of Quito, after being evicted by the police outside the Embassy of Mexico in the Ecuadorian capital.

“We ask for help,” said Arianis Lubin, a 37 year old accountant. “There are many children here, there are people who came with their children because in Cuba the situation is very difficult, and here they have nowhere to live.”
