Tuna producers exported a 2% more during first quarter of the year

The tuna sector grew by 2% in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016. This was one of the economic sectors whose sales were contingent upon the signing of the Trade Agreement with the European Union (EU).

The director of the Ecuadorian Chamber of Industrialists and Tuna Processors (Ceipa) Monica Maldonado said that the members of the guild confirmed the orders that depended on the agreement in the first quarter.

Tuna is highly consumed in Europe during the Lent. “Sales were ratified and dealing with the production capacity, as well as the change expectation of the government is left.”

The concern was to pay a 24% fee in case of not negotiating the agreement. “We have a direct competition from Asia and although they pay a tariff of 12%, it already covers the market.

Non-signing meant a loss of more than 60% of exports of loins and preserves. Maldonado explained that not only the exports were protected but also the work of thousands of people.
