The Venezuelan invasion

Ecuadornews:

In 2006, the number of Venezuelans entering Ecuador did not reach 12,000. A decade later, pushed by the crisis in their country, 13,700 citizens on average arrive, per month.

The statistics of the entry of 68,839 Venezuelans in the first five months of this year, show the extent of the humanitarian situation in that Latin American nation, whose inhabitants flee from hunger, lack of medicines and political and social upheaval, which accounts for 73 deaths in The streets during the 77 days of protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

“They come to Ecuador because it is the only choice they got to face the intolerable situation in their country” says Ecuadorian diplomat and former foreign minister Antonio Parra Gil, who believes that an urgent pronouncement by President Lenin Moreno (PAIS) is necessary to welcome those Citizens in refugee status, as was done at the time with those displaced by the Colombian conflict or the Haitians, in the earthquake of 2010.

“It’s not about political solidarity, it’s about human solidarity. They do not come for political reasons, they come because of pressing needs such as eating and breathing in a climate of peace”adds the lawyer.

His opinion is shared by the professor and internationalist Reinaldo Huerta Montalvo, who believes that a supra-state management that matches with the multilateral organisms is needed, that stops the political uncertainty and helps overcome the economic situation that afflicts the Venezuelans and that makes them migrate in to neighboring countries, including Ecuador. “Historically, our country has been faithful to the mandate of the liberator Simon Bolivar to fulfill the dream of turning America into a nation of republics, so that its members have a forced solidarity among us”.
