Informality is the thorn of MSMEs

Among the main internal obstacles for the activities and the growth of MSMEs, it is possible to enumerate the lack of managerial skills (more than anything, access to qualified personnel), limited service information and little access to market information.

As external obstacles, the lack of access to financing, informality, insufficient infrastructure, political instability, lack of clarity and coherence in business development policies and regulations, a limited information on support services, among others, said John Bliek, a specialist in Business, Cooperatives and Rural Development at the International Labor Organization, for the Andean countries.

Bliek added that the barriers lead to a low competitiveness and productivity. There is also the challenge of reconciling productivity with responsible and sustainable practices in the workplace, such as respect for labor rights and the improvement of working conditions to generate decent jobs. (I)
