Sustainable tuna fishing is treated in Manta

Since yesterday, the first working meeting on experiences in the development of non-enriching and biodegradable plantings, organized by Tuna Conservation Group (Tunacons) in coordination with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF ECUADOR), has been held in Manta (Hotel Oro Verde), to strengthen the sustainability of the purse-seine tuna fishery in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Guillermo Morán, manager of the Tunacons project, said that these companies are promoting a series of activities to generate sustainable tuna fishing. “That is through a fishery improvement project, which seeks to certify the fishery to the markets that develops through a responsible activity and has an adequate management of the fishery of its different artifacts, nets and planted which is what we are seeing today, “explained Morán.

During the day, the participants were informed of the Code of Good Practices on board for the management and release of the sensitive companion fauna according to the mitigation measures adopted by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (CIAT). In the morning, crew members and boat captains were shown how to develop these planted so as to have less impact on the marine environment.

Experts from various parts of the world, including members of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (CIAT), the Center for Marine and Food Technology Innovation (Azti Tecnalia) and the International Seafood Sustainable Foundation (ISSF) also attended. (I)
