La Cumbre is still being monitored on Fernandina Island

Yesterday the Ministry of Environment confirmed the eruption of the La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina Island , in the Galapagos archipelago.
The Geophysical Institute reported this Sunday, January 12, 2020 an increase in seismic activity and deformation of the volcano. In addition, about thirty earthquakes being the one of greatest magnitude that of 4.7 degrees recorded at 16:42 this Sunday.
Fernandina has no human population. It is the youngest island in the archipelago , it houses a native fauna composed of land and marine iguanas , endemic rodents , snakes, penguins and finches. It erupted for the last time in July 2018.
The Galapagos archipelago has been a natural heritage of humanity since 1978 by designation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( Unesco ).
