The Attorney General of Ecuador, Diana Salazar , held a meeting with her counterpart from the United States, Merrick Garland, in the capital of that country, Washington, this Thursday, November 16, 2023.
Prosecutors from Ecuador and the United States meet in Washington for cooperation
The objective of this meeting was “to continue cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime and corruption,” the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office announced on its social networks.
This was also corroborated by the United States Department of Justice , which assured that this entity “hopes to continue cooperation and partnership with the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office in the fight against transnational organized crime and corruption.”
According to the spokesperson for the United States Embassy in Quito, it is the first time that Salazar meets with the Attorney General, something that has already happened in the past between authorities at this level from both countries.
More details of this meeting have not yet been given, which occurs at a time when Ecuador is experiencing levels of insecurity related to the operation of organized crime groups linked to drug trafficking.
One of the most important investigations of the Prosecutor’s Office is related to the murder of the former presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, which occurred in the middle of the electoral campaign on August 9 in Quito.
The Ecuadorian State required support from the United States to find the whereabouts of those responsible.
