A Female Judge is Now in Charge of El Universo Case

Alembert Vera respects the judges decision

Edith Helen Mantilla Benitez became the newest member of the Second Criminal Chamberthat will resolve on September 13, the request of nullifying and appealing to the sentence against the directors of El Universo newspaper and its former editor of Opinion, Emilio Palacio.

Mantilla shall prepare a draft decision on the appeal, the other two magistrates of the Chamber will have to vote in favor or against it.

Both sides were invited to the selection of the new judge, but on this occasion Newspaper El Universo did not attend it because they considered it an invalid selection since the judges did not entered to the judicial office through a merit and opposition contest. (AV)
