Five major sectors that generate employment ended 2015 with high levels of lay-offs and staff turnover: construction, petroleum, automotive, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. This is indicated by the report of the Economic Situation of Ecuador and its impact on the Wage and Labor Market, prepared by the Deloitte consulting firm.

The situation in 2016 is not promising. For example, in the construction sector it is estimated that in the first month of the year, labor demand would drop by 2.7% compared with the previous month, according to the Monthly Study of Business Opinion (EMOE), of December 2015, conducted by the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE for its Spanish acronym).

Before this scenario, which is not exactly positive to generate more jobs, we can ask: Which may be the buoy against unemployment?

Francisco Alarcon, president of the National Federation of Chambers of Industry of Ecuador, told daily Expreso that one of the actions is that the government creates a set of laws that allow labor flexibility or adaptability.
