An Incident During a Referendum Debate in the National Assembly
Yesterday an incident occurred in the National Assembly during a debate on ballot questions, proposed by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa.
Within the debate Assemblywoman Cynthia Viteri complaint Virgilio Hernandez, who dropped a hint against the President of the Superior Court of Guayaquil, mother of congresswoman Viteri, this caused the Assemblywoman to walk straight to Hernandez in order to complain about the observation he made.
“Mr. Virgilio Hernández (talks) without knowing who my mother is, who incidentally was always from left, but the real left, not left of a group of thieves who remain silent when … they see corruption and remain silent and dare to lift their finger to point out to the person who still lives in the house that the Social Security gave them, when here in less time some went to live in mansions, this has been declared by yourselves … Mr. Hernandez, do you know who gave, as presidential candidate by the party to which I belonged, a ruling against Xavier Neira? It was my mother. Do you know who issued a ruling against Leon Febres-Cordero? It was my mother. I wish you could have a minimum of courage with President (Rafael) Correa, to lift your head as my mother did all her life,” said Viteri.
The incident prompted Assemblyman Henry Blacksmith, from Madera de Guerrero party, to defend thePresident of the Court of Guayas, Maria Leonor Jimenez, mother of Congresswoman Cynthia Viteri, and to suggest that it was better to investigate how legislators from PAIS party passed in four years from being tenants of modest apartments to mansions owners in exclusive towns of Quito, he was referring to Irina Cabezas.
A recurring topic during the debate was the criticisms for the proceedings of the Constitutional Court, especially because of the allegations that have arisen in recent hours about the alleged payment for the resolutions taken by the constitutional organism.
Enrique Herrería, member of the political party Madera de Guerrero, reported that the Constitutional Court, which has now been highlighted because it has been said that they charge for the judgments, is leaving the 20 days elapse they have to address the constitutionality of the questions contained in the referendum, to take no action and to let the questions be approved by the Ministry of Law to later go to the National Electoral Council to convene the referendum.
During the discussion, the opposition and the ruling party maintained their positions for and against the executive proposal.
