As soon as Alianza Pais leaves Carondelet, amendments shall be change, says Aparicio Caicedo
Aparicio Caicedo, co-author of the book “Indefinite Reelection versus Democracy,” when commenting on the constitutional amendments approved last week, which include indefinite presidential reelection, recalled that in Latin American history over and over again appears on the political scene a messianic leader who reaches the top of popularity and tries to be reelected and perpetuate in power, hence the importance of the principle of alternation.
This principle -he said- is the one to be defended, according to which there can be no political hegemony of who comes to power, and that’s what happens when those in power are only aimed at preserving their ideological model based on their charismatic leader, and that’s what happens in Ecuador.
“We have learned, those who wanted a referendum, that this can not happen and this should change as soon as Alianza Pais leaves Carondelet,” he said.
