Ash, explosions and earthquakes caused by the Tungurahua volcano
After the cannon shot of Sunday morning, the eruptive process, started 14 years ago, has not ceased and nearby populations are suffering the consequences of the natural phenomena, so the authorities has maintained the Orange alert, prior to the Red (of highest risk).
Villages in Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces are in higher risk and some residents have been evacuated to shelters.
The activity of the volcano of 5 029 meters high and located 135 km south of Quito, is characterized by the presence of explosions, moderate to small and earthquakes, according to the Geophysical Institute. The volcano is still roaring (“throat of fire” in the quichua language).
Meanwhile, authorities maintain since last February 4 the yellow alert in the Amazon provinces of Napo, Orellana and Sucumbíos, by the activity of the Reventador volcano, which has still a high seismicity and a remarkable increase in its activity accompanied by lava flows.
