Assange Under Protection of Ecuador Embassy

Julian Assange, founder of information site Wikileaks, is currently under the protection of the Ecuadorian embassy. Since Assange’s appeal was rejected by the London Supreme Court on 14 June 2012. On June 28, the United Kingdom police gave Assange a letter at the Ecuadorian embassy requesting that he surrenders to Belmarsh police station on June 29.
Assange’s legal advice stated that he is exercising his right to seek asylum, and this action takes precedence while the request is being processed to any extradition procedures.
Meanwhile Carl Bildt, the Swedish Foreign Minister announced through his Twitter account that the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, will make her first visit to Sweden since 1976. Clinton’s visits announce occurred four days after the delivery of the Assange sentence was made. (AV)
